How To Enjoy Fashion No Matter Your Size

Stanley Tucci may not have been far from the truth in his brutally honest portrayal of the fashion industry when he played seasoned New York designer Nigel in the acclaimed film, "The Devil Wears Prada." At one point in the movie he chastises a naive young journalist, Andy Sachs (played by Anne Hathaway) for refusing to starve herself. Size two, he explains, is now the new size four, and size zero the new size two.

This seemingly realistic depiction of the fashion industry as a whole does not hold true in a country where the average size of an American women is 14. Healthy and size 0 rarely go hand in hand. You don't need to deprive yourself of life to be beautiful. Dressing for your figure is the key to looking great and feeling confidant all in one amazing package.

There are a few tips which can help you look and feel graceful and lovely in whatever you wear. Stay away from those heavy, clingy fabrics that hug your body and accentuate your bulges. Fashion should flow gently. One example of a good option is the wrap dress which can be adjusted to fit perfectly. It's also comfortable, and you'll be amazed at how figure-friendly it really is.

You may have decided that your trouble starts at the elbows. If that is the case, remember to avoid "bubble sleeves." The unnecessary material combined with the tight enclosure at the end only serves to bring attention to a difficult area.

Wisely follow the belt trend. This year belts have been the "in" thing, dressing up last year's fashions that were bland with a new flair. Avoid pieces that are over the top and gaudy and pay attention to the area in which the belt will be placed. If you are heavy in the thighs and belly, the belt should fit firmly around the ribs. Don't cinch the belt tightly as it is not flattering and very uncomfortable.

You want to choose the right boots for you and your outfit. Although high boots look great with dresses, short women with pear-shaped figures need to wear boots with some heel. The added height from the heel will make your legs look longer, and add to your overall look of style and elegance. Boots paired with an empire waist dress is a popular combination. Since the empire waist falls just above the natural waist, they can make bottom heavy women look truly fabulous.

Choose a fabric with a subtle color, and ignore the common misconception that black is the only color that looks slimming. This has gone by the wayside, replaced by understatement. The key is to avoid obnoxious and unflattering prints and horizontal stripes. Instead try inviting and warm colors such as rusts, browns, and greens.

Most importantly, you want to take ownership of your style. You should choose dresses that will flatter your figure and boost your self-confidence. A few choice pieces can take you to work, out for dinner, or even to a cocktail party.
